Status: Full-Time/Exempt

Reports To: Executive Director

Direct Reports: This position oversees our growing team of policy advocates, which currently includes our Climate Senior Advisor, Peace and Security Advisor, and Diplomacy Associate.

Location: Washington, DC

Compensation: Salary for this position will be commensurate with skills and experience, in the range of 110,000-$140,000. Overall compensation includes highly competitive benefits package, which includes fully covered health, dental, and vision insurance; 401k with match program; paid parental leave; unlimited paid time off; and more.

Description: Foreign Policy for America (FP4A) is a national organization advocating for principled American engagement in the world. Together with our members and partners, we promote sound policies, hold elected officials accountable for their votes and actions, and help elect champions for our values. The Foreign Policy for America family of organizations includes FP Action Network, our federal political action committee, and Foreign Policy for America Foundation, our 501(c)(3) educational arm.

As we enter 2023, we’re seeking an extraordinary leader to drive FP4A’s efforts to enact sound policies and strengthen support on Capitol Hill for principled American internationalism. The ideal candidate will be an established foreign policy leader with significant experience pursuing legislative goals, a track record of successful staff management, and a vision for growing our community’s collective impact.

Responsibilities:

  • In consultation with FP4A membership and allied organizations, develop and execute strategies for advancing concrete policy action in line with FP4A’s legislative agenda

  • Manage and mentor a growing team of talented policy advocates.

  • Contribute to strategic planning and fundraising efforts to expand FP4A’s policy-focused work and impact. This includes identifying funding opportunities, developing relationships with donors, and developing concept papers and proposals.

  • Represent FP4A in media as a spokesperson and external thought leader. Raise FP4A’s visibility and credibility as a leader on key foreign policy issues.

  • Oversee the development of our biannual legislative agenda, in consultation with allied organizations and FP4A leadership, and the production of a biannual legislative scorecard.

  • Maintain a dialogue with FP4A members and leadership about policy priorities, opportunities for advocacy, and key victories for our community.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with Members of Congress, their staff, and other key policymakers.

  • Design and implement additional activities that spotlight our champions and encourage policymakers to adopt strong, principled positions on key foreign policy issues.

  • Lead and participate in coalitions with like-minded organizations to achieve shared policy goals.

  • As a senior leader within FP4A, contribute to organization-wide strategic planning, and assist with other duties as assigned.

Requirements: While the following requirements illustrate our intention to a hire an experienced senior leader, we recognize there are many unique experiences that could help prepare someone for this role.   • 10+ years of relevant professional experience, including at least five years pursuing legislative goals in a congressional office and/or advocacy organization. Deep understanding of legislative process and strategy and effective advocacy techniques.

  • Demonstrated commitment to FP4A’s mission of strengthening support for principled American engagement in the world.

  • 5+ years of supervisory experience. Track record of successful collaboration, staff management, and mentorship.

  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills.

  • Demonstrated expertise in multiple foreign policy issues. Record of persuasive communications on foreign policy topics. Media experience preferred but not required.

  • Clear vision for FP4A’s policy direction and goals for 2023-2026. Desire to contribute to organization-wide strategic planning and growth.

  • Strong organizational skills and experience in project/campaign management.

  • Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends.
