On July 28th, 2020 Foreign Policy for America hosted the next event in our members-only event series, The New Normal: Foreign Policy in a Post-Pandemic World, where we discuss the effects of the pandemic from a global, big-picture perspective.
The Humanitarian Response featured a deep-dive discussion on the U.S. response to the humanitarian crisis around the world. Recognizing that the security and well-being of Americans is inextricably tied to the security and well-being of people around the world, the U.S. has historically been a leader in tackling global crises, including by providing humanitarian assistance. Today U.S. assistance can play a powerful role, both by responding to immediate needs but also by investing in the long-term strengthening of local health systems to prevent future pandemics.
FP4A board member Stephen Grand was joined by Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA), Vice Chair of the State and Foreign Operations Subcommittee, and Amb. Mark Green, Executive Director of the McCain Institute and former USAID Administrator, to discuss the pandemic’s impact on less developed countries, the response from Washington, and the future of international assistance.
