Washington, D.C. — An agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and extend a ceasefire is an important and welcome first step to help ease the economic burden on American families created by President Trump’s war of choice. At the same time, this interim agreement is a temporary fix for a crisis created by the Trump administration.
As Trump’s misguided actions show, military strikes are not a sustainable solution to the Iran nuclear problem. Diplomacy worked to achieve significant and verified restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program in the past without any need for military action.
While Trump’s withdrawal from the 2015 Iran Nuclear Deal has put us in a weaker negotiating position for a far less ambitious deal, the Trump administration should not squander this moment and build on the diplomatic momentum to make progress on an agreement that prevents Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.
