Washington D.C. — President Trump’s declaration this morning that “a whole civilization will die tonight” amounts to a threat of genocide. It is a stain on our country and a sharp reminder of why U.S. Allies have distanced themselves from Trump and Netanyahu’s war. Trump’s threat to carry out attacks on power plants and bridges, which would disproportionately harm civilians, likewise signal his intent to order the U.S. military to commit war crimes.
A directive from President Trump and Secretary of Defense Hegseth to conduct wide-scale attacks on civilian infrastructure would be manifestly illegal. Senior military leaders who follow or issue such an unlawful order will be subject to prosecution under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.
It is time to end this war. Every day the costs of the conflict rise. 13 American soldiers have died and more than 300 have been wounded. Trump has spent tens of billions of dollars fighting a war that Americans didn’t ask for and Congress never authorized, and to pay for it, he plans to gut spending on healthcare and other priorities here at home. Gas prices are spiking. The cost of fertilizer needed to grow crops is up 25%. And for what?
Congress must return to Washington immediately and put a stop to this madness.
