Washington D.C. — Foreign Policy for America strongly opposes the Trump administration’s destructive expansion of the Global Gag Rule, which will lead to even more unnecessary death and suffering of vulnerable people around the world.
Although this move is meant to freeze out organizations and governments that do not strictly follow the administration’s “anti-woke” policies, the consequences of this decision will be measured in the lives lost in communities who rely on international support for health services, food aid, and rescue efforts.
This decision will undermine U.S. assistance for vulnerable populations—cutting off support whenever an implementing organization uses non-U.S. funding to provide comprehensive care or shows respect for the dignity and diversity of all people. This policy will weaken lifesaving programs and deal yet another blow to American international leadership.
“This decision will have an immediate and devastating impact, depriving some of the world’s most vulnerable populations of basic, life-saving aid that would otherwise be available,” said Stephenie Foster, FP4A Board Member and former Senior Advisor and Counselor in the Secretary’s Office of Global Women’s Issues at the U.S. Department of State. “The United States should be a leader to ensure that people have access to essential health and humanitarian services.”
