Politicizing the Diplomatic Corps Weakens U.S. Leadership

Washington, D.C. — Foreign Policy for America (FP4A) is deeply concerned by reports that the Trump administration is recalling roughly two dozen career U.S. ambassadors without explanation. These diplomats are nonpartisan Foreign Service officers who have ably represented Americans under presidents from both parties.

Removing these career ambassadors is particularly appalling at a time when dozens of ambassadorships already remain vacant. It cedes even more ground to competitors like China and Russia.

“It’s as if President Trump doesn’t want to compete with China for influence in the world. Or that he wants to tie one hand behind our backs,” said Andrew Albertson, Executive Director of Foreign Policy for America. “These are some of our country’s most capable public servants, deployed to make the world safer for American businesses, tourists, and consumers. Why fire them now? What’s the upside?”
