As Prime Minister Netanyahu embarks on a reckless military operation against Iran, our thoughts and prayers are with American military service members, diplomats, and the millions of innocent civilians in the region now caught in harm’s way.
Despite Netanyahu’s claims, this is not a war to pre-empt an imminent Iranian attack. It is a war of choice designed to prevent negotiations between the United States and Iran. It represents a public humiliation of President Trump.
Every step of the way, President Trump has failed to address the Iranian challenge. He ripped up the JCPOA, which had verifiably blocked Iran’s pathways to a nuclear weapon. He failed to negotiate a better deal after allowing himself to get boxed into an unnecessary and unrealistic demand for zero enrichment. And now, he has fully lost control of events, with Netanyahu sabotaging his negotiations planned for this weekend.
Right now, there is an urgent need for U.S. diplomatic leadership to de-escalate this conflict. The Trump Administration cannot let Netanyahu drag us into yet another costly and unnecessary war in the Middle East.
