FP4A Statement on the Hamas Attacks on Israel

Washington, DC – Foreign Policy for America condemns the shocking and horrific attacks by Hamas against Israel. They are an affront to international law and the rights of all people, regardless of identity, to live in security and dignity. We mourn the loss of lives and stand in solidarity with the people of Israel in this moment of tragedy and danger.

As of right now, we know these terrorist attacks have resulted in the tragic loss of more than 900 Israeli lives, as well as American citizens. Thousands have been wounded. More are kidnapped or unaccounted for. We extend our heartfelt condolences to all of the victims and their loved ones. Hamas must be held accountable, and we hope for their quick and decisive defeat.

We acknowledge also the ongoing suffering of the millions of Palestinian civilians living in Gaza who are not responsible for these attacks and urge the Israeli government in its response to do its utmost to differentiate between Hamas terrorists and civilians, in accordance with international law.

The Biden Administration has taken important steps to re-affirm the United States’ commitment to Israel’s self-defense and deter any country in the region that may seek to exploit this tragedy. The Senate should act in lockstep by swiftly confirming an Ambassador to Israel and ending the indefensible holds on military promotions. The House of Representatives must put aside politics, elect a Speaker, and join President Biden in offering all appropriate means of support to Israel.
