Foreign Policy for America Statement on the Increased Refugee Admission Cap of 125,000

Washington, DC – Foreign Policy for America welcomes the announcement by the Biden administration that it will raise the refugee admission cap to 125,000 in FY2022, making good on an important campaign promise. We also encourage the administration to make this part of a more ambitious and durable commitment to refugee resettlement in the United States, including increased funding and a call for Congress to establish a permanent statutory floor of no less than 125,000 refugee admissions a year.

Foreign Policy for America further calls on the Biden administration to continue its efforts to evacuate American citizens, Special Immigrant Visa holders, and other eligible individuals out of Afghanistan, and provide equitable benefits and support for Afghan visa holders and humanitarian parolees arriving in the United States.

“We appreciate the Biden administration’s leadership on this issue that’s so central to our history as a country. At a time when we are seeing some of the highest rates of forced displacement since World War II, we cannot just undo the harm of the Trump administration,” said Foreign Policy for America Executive Director Andrew Albertson. “Americans of all political stripes are rightfully proud of our refugee resettlement program. Welcoming those escaping conflict, disaster, and persecution is not just the right thing to do, it’s who we are.”
