Foreign Policy for America Statement on “Snapback” of Iran Sanctions

Washington, DC – After the Trump administration’s embarrassing defeat last week at the UN Security Council, attempting to extend the arms embargo on Iran, the administration is doubling down on its failed Iran strategy and is further isolating the United States in the eyes of the world. The Trump administration’s decision to invoke the “snapback” provision in UNSCR 2231, the resolution that implements the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA, or Iran nuclear deal), is a transparent effort to kill the nuclear deal. Instead of engaging in good faith diplomacy and trying to find a mutually agreeable option to extend the embargo, the Trump administration chose the most extreme option, with no international support, which could spell the end of the JCPOA. Foreign Policy for America condemns unilateral actions that undermine diplomatic agreements.
