Maria Otero serves as a trustee at the Kresge Foundation and on the board at DAI. From 2009 to 2013, Ms. Otero served as U.S. Undersecretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy and Human Rights under Secretary Hillary Clinton, overseeing foreign relations issues ranging from refugees and human trafficking to global criminal justice and narcotics. She also served as President Obama’s Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues. Born in Bolivia, Otero was formerly president and CEO of ACCION International, a global microfinance and economic development nonprofit. Prior to ACCION, where she worked for 23 years, Ms. Otero served as the economist for Latin America in the U.S. Agency for International Development's Women in Development office.
